Broken Spokes on a Hub-Motor Wheel

Why they break, and what's safe

Quick answer

A broken spoke weakens the whole wheel. Ride gently straight to a shop, or don't ride if the wheel wobbles or rubs. Loose spokes are usually the cause.

  1. Squeeze the spokes in pairs
  2. Spin the wheel and watch
  3. Take broken spokes out of the way

In plain English

Hub-motor wheels carry a heavy motor and push hard on the spokes, so they're more likely to break, especially if spokes have worked loose. One broken spoke means the others take extra load, and more will follow. Fixing it properly means replacing the spoke and truing the wheel.
